2009 was a big year for K-pop. The music industry in Korea exploded and garnered a huge following from all over the world. New fans to K-pop were achieved by some of the most popular songs in Korean history. Girls’ Generation became the “it” group with the explosive hits of “Gee” and “Genie”. “Gee” also became the longest running #1 song on KBS Music Bank with a 9 week run. Super Junior dominated the year with “Sorry, Sorry” by winning “Album of the Year” at the Golden Disk Awards. They followed up the hit with “It’s You”. Wonder Girls found global success by breaking into the American mainstream music industry with their mega single “Nobody”. They became the first Korean group to enter America’s Billboard Hot 100.
It is also in this year that TVXQ members Xiah, Hero, and Micky filed the shocking lawsuit against SM Entertainment, which resulted in the cancellation of 2009’s SMTown Live. This unfortunate happening resulted in his voluntary departure from the group for the remainder of the year. The remaining group members came back with their memorable hit “Heartbeat” but still expressed their desire for Jay Park’s return. Big Bang went solo during this year where Seungri found success with “Strong Baby”, while G-Dragon took over with “Heartbreaker”. Brown Eyed Girls also made their mark this year with “Abracadabra” and “Sign”.
There have also been a number of rookie groups to establish themselves as part of the escalating K-pop industry during this year, with many of them being girl groups. 2NE1 made a name for themselves with their hits “Fire” and “I Don’t Care”, being the girls with a fierce image. 4minute gained recognition for their memorable single “Muzik”.
